The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Wed 28.5.2014, released Taxation Revenue, Australia, 2012-13. The publication contains statistics of taxation revenue collected by all levels of government in Australia for the periods 2003-04 to 2012-13. Some of the stats for 2012-13 include:
- Total taxation revenue collected in Australia increased $25.23bn (6%) from $389.90bn in 2011-12 to $415.12bn 2012-13. Over the same period, taxes on income increased id=”mce_marker”0.89bn (5%), while taxes on property increased $2.42bn (7%) and taxes on provision of goods and services increased $2.88bn (3%). In 2012-13, taxes on income represented 58% of total taxation revenue for all levels of government and taxes on provision of goods and services, including the GST, represented 23%.
- State government taxation revenue (including taxes received from other levels of government and public corporations) increased $3.62bn (6%) from $59.88bn in 2011-12 to $63.50bn in 2012-13. This was driven by a id=”mce_marker”.60bn (8%) increase in property taxes and a id=”mce_marker”.01bn (5%) increase in employers’ payroll taxes. Taxes on property was the largest source of taxation revenue (35%) for state governments in 2012-13, followed by employers’ payroll taxes (33%).
- Income taxes levied on individuals in 2012-13 represented 39% of total taxation revenue. In comparison, income taxes levied on enterprises represented 19%. GST revenue in 2012-13 represented 12% of total taxation revenue for all levels of government.
- Income taxes levied on individuals increased by $9.23bn (6%) to id=”mce_marker”62.99bn. Income taxes levied on enterprises increased by id=”mce_marker”.84bn (2%) to $77.70bn. Income taxes paid by superannuation funds decreased by $264m (3%) to $7.58bn.
