Responding to suggestions that people should be allowed to access their superannuation to help in buying their first home, the Prime Minister said in a doorstop interview [on Mon 9.3.2015] that the idea had “been around for quite some time”. He said it was an idea that “has a lot of currency in other countries, for instance, Singapore has long had a situation where people’s savings are accessible for home ownership”.

The PM said it was “a perfectly good and respectable idea” that he is happy to see further debated. At this stage, however, the PM said the Government does not have any plans to introduce it.

Mr Abbott also said the Government had no plans to make any changes to the aged pension other than those that were announced in the 2014-15 Federal Budget.
