On 27.11.18, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) released its Statistics reports for the September 2018 quarter.
Total asset sizes, by category of superannuation funds – at 30 September 2018 (compared with 30 Sept 2017):
- Total superannuation assets: $2,759 b (+8.8% over $2,536 billion – one year earlier)
- Total ‘APRA regulated’ assets: $1,808 b (+10.4% over $1,637 b – one year earlier)
- Of which: ‘MySuper’ total assets: $695 b (+13.9% over $610 b – one year earlier)
- Total ‘Self Managed Super Fund’ (SMSF) assets: $775 b (+6.7% over $707 b – one year earlier) – note: this is about 28% of the total pool of superannuation assets and more than total ‘MySuper’ assets.
- Exempt public sector superannuation schemes assets: $143 b (+4.6% over $137 b – one year earlier)
- Balance of life office statutory fund assets: $53 b (-3.1% over $55 b – one year earlier)
- Total ‘APRA regulated’ assets: $1,808 b (+10.4% over $1,637 b – one year earlier)
The investment allocation, of the APRA regulated funds, with more than 4 members, as at the end of the September 2018 quarter, was
- Equities: 51.5 per cent of the $1.7 trillion investments, with
- 24.7 per cent in international listed equities,
- 22.8 per cent in Australian listed equities and
- 3.9 per cent in unlisted equities.
- Fixed income and cash investments accounted for 31.1 per cent of investments, with
- 21.0 per cent in fixed income and
- 10.1 per cent in cash.
- Property and Infrastructure: 13.6%
- Other assets (including hedge funds and commodities): 3.8 per cent
The annual industry-wide rate of return (ROR) for entities with more than four members:
- For the year ending September 2018 was 8.1 per cent.
- The five year average annualised ROR to September 2018 was 7.3 per cent, with:
- 5% for Sept 2013
- 7% for Sept 2014
- 7% for Sept 2015
- 9% for Sept 2016
- 8.5% for Sept 2017
- 7% for Sept 2018
