The Senate on Tue 26.2.2013, agreed to a motion put by Greens Leader Senator Milne that a number of matters concerning the Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT) be referred to the Senate References Committee on Economics for report by 6 May 2013. Those matters included the operation of the mining tax re the revenue shortfall that has been revealed, in particular:
- the design of the MRRT and the extent to which that design as opposed to other factors, was responsible for the mismatch between actual revenue and revenue projections;
- the process by which the MRRT was designed;
- the extent to which, if at all, the Government took into account the views of communities affected or potentially affected by iron ore and coal mining when designing the MRRT;
- implications for the Budget.
