The Assistant Treasurer announced on Mon 8.4.2013, that providers of ethics classes in government schools will be eligible for deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. He said the Government will amend the tax laws to expand the DGR categories to include organisations approved by State or Territory governments to provide ethics classes in public schools as an alternative to special religious education classes.

According to Mr Bradbury, expanding the DGR categories administered by the ATO to providers of ethics classes “is a better and more principled way of providing DGR status to such organisations”. Currently, the tax laws do not provide a category for those providers. He said the amendment will be progressed in the upcoming Winter Sittings of Parliament.
