The Prime Minister and the Minister for the Environment on Wed 13.11.2013 introduced a package of 11 Bills in the House of Reps to repeal the carbon tax from 1 July 2014 and make related tax and other amendments. The Bills are:

The Bills also propose to:

  • remove the equivalent carbon price imposed through the fuel tax credit system, through excise and excise equivalent customs duties, and through synthetic greenhouse gas (SGG) levies;
  • make arrangements for the management of the last financial year in which the carbon tax will apply (2013-14) and the collection of any outstanding carbon tax liabilities; and
  • provide new powers to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) to ensure the passing through of price reductions relating to the carbon tax repeal.

Bills referred to Senate Committee (for report by 2 December 2013?)

The package of carbon tax repeal Bills has been referred to the Senate Environment and Communications Legislation Committee for inquiry and report (although a reporting date has not yet been set – the Selection of Bills Committee noted that 2 December 2013 was a possible reporting date – like the referral of the Mining Tax abolition).

Bills pass Lower House and move to the Senate

On Thur 21.11.2013, the package of 11 Bills to repeal the carbon tax and make associated tax changes was also passed by the House of Reps without amendment and now moves to the Senate.
